Brian Law 66 Motor Palace

We spent a few hours this morning with Brian Law at his shop in Orange, CA. Like us, Brian is also into photography-- you could check out his photos on his website http://www.66motorpalace.com

Also, if you're in the market for some good-quality leather jackets check out the store on  66 Motor Palace.

Expect to see more of Brian in our 4th volume. Happy Cindo de Mayo!

Charles

Charles Osborne, until my most recent encounter, has never ceased to amaze me. I met him a few years ago while taking my second photography course at community college-- he was the prototypical bold character that always sits in the front of the class, the annoying know-it-all that never eases up on questioning the ability of the rather experienced instructor. If someone had a question in the wet lab, he'd be somewhere near with a good ear and spot-on advice. Dark spots on your photo? Well, don't contaminate the trays. Not enough contrast in your image? Well, use contrast filter No. 3.

It was while we were both waiting for our film to dry, or sometime when our instructor started her lecture too late, that we got to talking. He was surprised that I admired photographers like Weegee, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Doisneau. I was enamored with his film equipment, his knowledge of bygone techniques. Each night he'd ride in on his bicycle from Old Town Torrance covered in modern menswear: fedora hats, wingtip shoes, Pendleton Flannels, and surplus jackets.

We hooked up during our third class together for this shoot around his neighborhood. He had become Threads and Needles #1 customer, a local clothing store just a few steps from his home that carries exclusive brands unknown to most people around the Los Angeles suburb-- this is where we shot.

Self-Proclaimed Kook.

"I'm just a kook."  Realistically, he can claim what he wants.  Personally, I would disagree, but of course, I'm dealing with humbleness at its finest.  This is the man that really made it all happen for me and Throttle Merchants.  A photog that really took me under his wing and helped me every step of the way with zero hesitation.  He has the ability to capture a unique feel in still shot photography, the confidence to publish what many would consider to be "flawed" photos because of a little blurred movement.    Well, honestly, I think photography is about capturing candid times in our lives and I'll tell you one thing I know for sure--life is flawed.  He has truly created an incomparable style, especially in today's digital world.  No gay photoshop effects, just his Leica and 24 exposures. So, thank you Adam Wright for not only helping me out when I was in need, but more importantly, for giving the world a real look into a life we haven't lived.

If you ever get a chance to buy one of his photo magazines...do it.
The photo was taken in-between a game of HORSE in Santa Cruz, CA.  Adam won.

THE AMERICANS

So, Matt and I have been heavily influenced by master b&w photographers from America's golden ages. William Gedney, Walker Evans, Danny Lyon, Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White etc.... are just a few. Ultra cool American photography is TOP. Black and white, high or low contrast, effortless composition that allows anyone to be transcended into any moment of any given image from the 40s-70s...this is great photography in our minds. If ever you wanted a good book on your coffee table, The Americans by Robert Frank is a total must-buy / must-have.
